Americans should feel very privileged to have such extensive private health care insurance. You know many countries do not have health care insurance at all, public (government run) or private (run by insurance companies). Take Peru for instance, nobody has any health care insurance there, and everyone seems to be living there well without it.

Not long ago, I had a conversation with an acquaintance (I use that term very loosely due to his stance on a good many issues from politics and economics to environmental concerns and views on the United States) in Peru, and he stated:

Well, in Peru almost nobody has health insurance. I do not know if health insurance will matter much if oceans raise by 3 meters, about 9.9 feet, and if the economic debacle after 2012 makes insurances go bankrupt and we have little or nothing.

Well, this is very true, as if something serious does come along, the insurance system (private or public) would collapse and all that money everyone paid in would be for not. For instance, a large outbreak or pandemic of Swine Flu would send everyone to the hospital and over run the entire medical system and the insurance companies trying to pay for medical visits.

Just like a mega-Hurricane could wipe out all the insurance companies in Florida or a massive Earthquake in San Francisco would do the same in California. But before we trash on private healthcare insurance we must realize how insurance really works and why it is such a profitable business model.

Insurance is nothing more than a probability game, and the house always wins. Do you like to gamble with your money with house rules? I dont. Of course, perhaps that is just my mathematical mind talking as I do have catastrophic coverage and have had lots of insurance over the years, for so many things, and rarely used any of it. And when I did, my rates increased thereafter.

One would be better to play it safe, save, and avoid most risks, but have their own money to bail themselves out if something terrible were to go wrong, you know some Black Swan event in their lives. It is interesting in the US that folks often claim they are being ripped off by their health insurance carriers and they want the US Government to do it instead.

Why, would they rather be ripped off by the less-efficient government and have less services, less coverage, and higher costs? Id rather go with Perus health care system myself. Please consider all this.
